ABSTRACT |
Objects: There are various headaches associated with sleep disorder, and sleep disorder is known to cause primary headaches such as migraines and tension type headaches. Therefore it is important to evaluate sleep disorder as an approach to determining the diagnosis and the method of treatment in patients complaining of headaches.
Methods: As a prospective study, survey was done on evaluating the sleep disorder associated with headaches in 97 patients complaining of headaches who have visited the out-patient clinic. Self-reported questionnaires such as Stanford Sleepiness Scale, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, Berlin Question, Korean version of the Johns Hopkins telephone diagnostic interview Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Beck Depression Inventory were used to examine the sleep and associated problems of the patients.
Results: Among 97 patients, 75 patients (77.3%) have met the abnormal diagnostic criteria in at least one of the sleep survey scales. According to ICHD-2 criteria, 55 patients were tension type headache and 42 patients were other types of both primary and secondary headache. Sleep quality was better in tension type headache group than other types (p=0.013). Secondary headache group showed lower sleep quality and higher risk of insomnia and sleep apnea syndrome than primary headache group (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Since sleep disorders are accompanied in a lot of patients with headache, careful evaluation of sleep disturbance in headache patients will be of great help for the treatment of these patients. |
